Oregon monastery-to-be
Greetings,
My name is Rich Mitchell and my wife’s name is Denice Goodheart. Denice, Danan Gensho, had her lay ordination with Gary McNabb in Eugene, Oregon.
We have spent four years working on rehabilitating the elementary school campus here in our small community of Lorane. We are looking to find someone to shepherd this gem into the future. Although we imagine it to be a long shot, we are hoping to pique the interest of some group of Zen practitioners who might be looking for a monastery.
The campus is uniquely well positioned for this opportunity. The ‘vibe’ is something difficult to locate. It is located at the top of the Siuslaw River watershed overlooking the Lorane Valley. It is very quiet and private and part of the original complex of civic buildings of the community constructed in early 1900s: grange hall, Rebecca’s lodge, church, and fire hall. They are classic Northwest unincorporated small town.
The campus and associated residential land, six 2-acre build-ready lots, comprise 16+ park-like acres. The school buildings have 23,000 square feet of space and are classified as rural commercial: a zone with a broad allowable uses. It is a mile from Oregon’s largest and most elaborate winery and vineyard, and approximately 20 miles to Eugene.
We have lived in this community for 29 years and find it to be a highly favorable place.
Perhaps this little notice will land in just the right hands. I would love to talk to anyone to move this in a positive direction. Photos and more online here.
Thank you your time and warmest regards,
Rich Mitchell
