Northwest Dharma Association 2022 Annual Report

The mission of the Northwest Dharma Association is to support Buddhist teachings and community in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and British Columbia. NWDA publishes the Northwest Dharma News twice a year, and the Sangha Update twice a month. We maintain a website with an online directory of more than 200 Buddhist groups and an online calendar of their activities.

In February, NWDA Executive Director George Draffan participated in a panel of religious leaders sponsored by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Faithnet.

In April we sponsored a Regional Buddhist Teachers and Leaders gathering in an online format.  A panel exploring “What Does Northest Buddhism Look Like in the 21st Century?” was held with Irene Goto (Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple), George Kosho Finch Sensei (Henjyoji Shingon Buddhist Temple), and Jeong Ji Anita Feng (Blue Heron Zen Community). The panel discussion can be viewed on NWDA’s YouTube channel

In October NWDA sponsored a Regional Buddhist Teachers and Leaders gathering hosted by the Portland Insight Meditation Community. This was our first in-person gathering since the Covid pandemic.

In December NWDA was invited to present an overview of Buddhism for a class of 9th grade students at The Northwest School in Seattle. The students explored the story of Siddhartha Gautama, the spread of Buddhism across Asia, the basics of mindfulness, meditation, and ethics.

NWDA relies entirely on donations from Buddhist groups and individuals. We operate on a volunteer-based budget to publish the Northwest Dharma News and the Sangha Update, to maintain a complex website, to support member groups, and to co-sponsor community events.  We invite you to make donations of any size on our website
