Remembering Karuna Rose

Karuna Rose (Roslyn Weiner)

Dear friends and family of Karuna Rose (also known as Roslyn “Roz” Weiner),

We wanted to share that our dear Karuna passed away, at age 72, on Wednesday January 31, 2024.

Many in the Seattle area will remember Karuna’s work in bringing together Asian and Western Buddhists by sponsoring “temple tours” to learn about the diversity of Buddhist traditions and cultures in the Northwest.

A public memorial celebration will take place on March 19
from 6-8pm Pacific Time in this Zoom room.  If you know others who might have known her, please pass this along.

There will be a Buddhist ceremony and spreading of her ashes into the water earlier that day in a private ceremony.

Namaste,

Cheryl Cohen, Bria Chakofsky-Lewy, Scott Hogan, Dianne Shiner, and Rick Harlan

Karuna Rose (AKA Roslyn (Roz) Weiner), age 72, of Lynnwood, Washington passed away on Wednesday January 31, 2024.

Karuna is survived by her brother Charles Weiner, Nephew David Weiner, Niece Debbie Weiner, and her Aunt Goldie Berman. She was preceded in death by her parents, A. Allan Weiner and Myra (Berman) Weiner, and her brother Mark Weiner.

Karuna was born August 30, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois. She trained as a social worker and spent her career working to help Asian refugees, in both Southeast Asia and the United States. She was passionate about life and all it had to offer, with a strong personality full of compassion and caring, As a warm and funny person she loved being around people, always wanting to know how they felt and how they ticked. Karuna also trained as a massage and energy therapist as a way to further provide comfort. She expressed her artistic side making beautiful pottery. Along with a strong love of nature, Karuna loved swimming in lakes and just being outside. Her travels through the world brought great joy to her.

She converted to Buddhism in 1997 and changed her name from Roz Weiner to Karuna Rose. Karuna, a Sanskrit word meaning compassion or working to diminish the suffering of others, and Rose, to honor her grandmother. The name fit her well. Buddhism brought her great comfort and sustained her through the rest of her life. Much gratitude is given for the loving, compassionate care provided by all the caregivers at Faithful Adult Family Home, Karuna’s home for the last eight years of her life.
