Shinnyo-en is an international Buddhist community founded on the ancient wisdom and love embodied in the Buddha’s teachings, and a place for Buddhist training that’s open to all..
Shinnyo Buddhism is rooted in the 1,100 year old Dharma lineage known as Shingon Buddhism, one of the main forms of esoteric Buddhism in Japan. Laity and clergy are able to train together.
Central to Shinnyo Buddhism is the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, one of the most seminal texts of Mahayana (Great Vehicle) Buddhism.
Sesshin, which means “to touch the essence” in Japanese, is Shinnyo-en’s meditative training to help each individual nurture their buddha nature.
Shinnyo-en is currently led by Her Holiness Shinso Ito.
There are two types of sesshin in Shinnyo-en. One is “structured” (uso) sesshin, which consists of brief, face-to-face guidance between specially trained spiritual guides and members.
