Join us for a weekend with Guest Teacher Phillip Moffit.  There will be a Friday evening Online Program and a weekend Online retreat. No registration is required for the Friday evening program.  Registration will be required for the weekend retreat.

Through mindfulness practice, we discover that each moment contains an inner and outer experience in the mind-heart. One of the often-unrecognized opportunities of practice is to develop our awareness of the “inner” and “outer” in a way that brings wisdom and compassion into our daily lives. Exploring the
inner and outer through meditation can be incredibly interesting and directly lead us to a lessening of suffering.

Whether it’s the Four Noble Truths or any other dharma teaching, new understanding arises when we are mindful of the inner and outer aspects of our experience. For instance, when we directly experience both the inner and outer in the teaching of the Second Noble Truth, we create favorable circumstances for liberating insight to arise.

The meditations on this weekend retreat focus on the felt experience of the inner and outer rather than conceptual understanding. It can be fun and feel different to practice in this manner. All levels of experience are welcome. This online retreat will follow the regular pattern of sitting and walking meditation practices.

Teacher Bio

Phillip Moffitt is a Vipassana meditation teacher, former publishing executive, author, and an instructor at Spirit Rock Meditation Center in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has taught Theravada Buddhism for over 25 years and served as co-guiding teacher at Spirit Rock Meditation Center from 2010 to 2018. His teacher, the Venerable Ajahn Sumedho, inspired his book on the Four Noble Truths, Dancing with Life: Buddhist Insights for Finding Meaning and Joy in the Face of Suffering.

Phillip’s most recent book, Awakening through the Nine Bodies, presents his understanding of a set of teachings about the nature of consciousness that were transmitted to him by the Himalayan yoga master Swami Sri Premvarni Balyogi. These teachings are useful to vipassana practitioners who wish to explore in meditation the various qualities and energies of consciousness.

Prior to immersing himself in the study of Theravada Buddhism, Phillip spent over ten years studying and practicing yoga with teachers in the Sivananda and Iyengar traditions. He has written numerous articles about practicing the dharma in daily life for both Buddhist and yoga magazines. Many of these articles, as well as recordings of Moffitt’s dharma talks, can be found on his website Dharma Wisdom.

In addition to teaching meditation, Phillip is the president of Life Balance Institute, which he founded in 1995. In his work at the institute, he trains individuals and groups in the principles of values-based leadership and living with an emphasis on how to skillfully make major life transitions.

Before becoming a meditation teacher and founding Life Balance Institute, Phillip was editor-in-chief and CEO of Esquire and led the successful turnaround of the magazine in the 1980s.
