Change is an Inside Job.

This discussion group is geared toward young adults (ages 18-27) and focused on increasing our understanding of the Dharma and connection to the Sangha, gaining wisdom and developing compassion, engaging in acts of community service with the Marici Fellowship, and exploring the integration of Buddhist practice when facing injustices and suffering in our communities.

Launching the group we will start with a book discussion on “Wake Up to What Matters” by H.E. Avikrita Rinpoche available at the monastery Bookshop if you can not afford to purchase the book but would like to attend, contact the monastery office, we are happy to help.

Mía Garcia: Hi, I’m Mía! I am a student under H.E. Avikrita Vajra Sakya Rinpoche, whose teachings inspire me daily to cultivate bodhicitta. I began practicing at Sakya Monastery in 2021 while working as a 9-1-1 EMT and took refuge under Avikrita Rinpoche in 2022. I volunteer with the Marici Fellowship and serve as a Young Adult Representative on the Sakya Board of Advisors. I am passionate about mental health awareness and currently work on a mental health crisis line while studying clinical social work at the University of Washington. In addition to my dharma practice, I enjoy being in nature, painting landscapes, and caring for my cat and seven fish with my life partner.

Colin Lamb: I am a long-time member of Sakya Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism. I feel extremely grateful to have received Refuge Blessings from H.H. Dagchen Dorje Chang and H.E Avikrita Vajra Rinpoche and also for the opportunity to be an active volunteer for Marici Fellowship. After participating in many programs centered around Social Justice, food justice, and racial justice, as well as environmental restoration work, I recently received a BA in Political Economy, Global Studies, and Environmental Justice from Evergreen State College and am presently employed helping those who are houseless get connected to resources they need. I look forward to having a conversation on the Climate Crisis, hearing different perspectives, finding ways our Buddhist practice can help us envision a brighter more sustainable future, and creating pathways toward making positive changes in our lives.
