Illuminating the Bardo Thodol~A Teaching About the Tibetan Book of the Dead from a Dzogchen Perspective with Francesca Fremantle

Join acclaimed scholar and translator Francesca Fremantle for an exploration of the Bardo Thodol (The Tibetan Book of the Dead) through the lens of Dzogchen, the Great Perfection. Far from being a manual just for the end of life, Dr. Fremantle—co-translator of the text alongside Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche and author of Luminous Emptiness—reveals how this sacred text is designed for daily living. This talk will explore the concept of the bardo not merely as an intermediate state after death, but as the continuous, shifting gaps in our everyday reality where absolute clarity and awakened nature are fully accessible.

Francesca Fremantle is a scholar and translator of Sanskrit and Tibetan works of Hindu and Buddhist tantra. She received her doctorate from the School of Oriental and African Studies at London University. She was a student of Chögyam Trungpa for many years. She worked closely with Chögyam Trungpa on the 1975 translation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Her remarkable book about the Bardo Thodol, or Tibetan Book of the Dead, Luminous Emptiness, is available from Shambhala.
