This text, written by the great Tibetan master Je Tsongkhapa, describes the three principal aspects of the path—the intention to be free (renunciation), the mind of enlightenment (bodhicitta), and the right view of the wisdom realizing emptiness—how to cultivate them, and how to know when you have realized them.
A foundational text of Mahayana Buddhism and considered a prerequisite for Vajrayana (tantric) Buddhism, it offers a succinct outline of the path to full enlightenment. Following on the visit earlier this fall from the Tibetan Buddhist nuns and the creation of a sand mandala (an aspect of tantric practice), this is a precious opportunity to clear away misconceptions and gain deeper understanding of the complete Buddhist path by a teacher renowned around the world for her skillful explanations bringing Buddhist philosophy down to earth.
Venerable Thubten Chodron graduated with a B.A. in History from UCLA in 1971 and did graduate work in Education at USC while teaching in the LA City Schools. She was ordained as a Buddhist nun in the Tibetan tradition in 1977 and has studied and practiced Tibetan Buddhism under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan masters for many years in India and Nepal. She has been resident teacher at Amitabha Buddhist Centre in Singapore and at Dharma Friendship Foundation in Seattle. She is founder and abbess of Sravasti Abbey in Newport, Washington, one of the few monasteries for Western monastics in the Tibetan tradition in the United States. Active in interfaith dialogue and prison work, she has authored several books on Buddhism and is now nearing completion of a 10 volume series with the Dalai Lama entitled the Library of Wisdom and Compassion. She teaches Buddhist philosophy, psychology, and meditation worldwide.
