Heart of Wisdom Zen Buddhist Temple

Description

The purpose of Heart of Wisdom is to provide a refuge of stillness and peace in a busy urban environment, to practice and share Buddhist teachings, and to cultivate the qualities of unflagging optimism, self-discipline, compassion, and wisdom.

Daily zazen and free instruction in how meditate geared to beginners is offered. People of all ages and experience levels are encouraged to find a comfortable way to meditate using a chair, a bench, or cushion. Individual and group practice support is available. Also offered are quarterly day-long silent retreats, called zazenkai. There is never a charge for meditation so these offerings are supported by donation.

Workshops and classes are also offered, connecting spiritual practice and daily life with topics on relationships, communication, money, work, mindful eating, and the arts.

Meditation instruction is available for all newcomers. If it’s your first time, please arrive 15-20 minutes early so that you can get a tour and get settled.

Meditation instruction and orientation to the temple available, just ask the greeter. Please arrive 10 minutes before an event to get settled.

Tuesday evenings, 7 pm – 9 pm
Meditation, a short talk and group discussion about how Buddhist teachings apply to our life today. Led by Zen Teacher Nancy Kodo Conover.

Thursday evenings, 7 pm – 8:30 pm
Guided Meditation that includes embodiment, compassion, absorption and awareness practices. Currently exploring Awakening through the Zen koan technology. Led by Amy Kisei Costenbader, Sensei.

Friday afternoon open zendo, 11 am – 12:30 pm
Open zendo – drop in any time. Begins with short chanting service.

Sunday mornings, 9:30 – 11:30 am
Meditation followed by Dharma talk. Led by Zen Teacher Fuho Trussell.

Sunday evenings, at 7 pm – 9 pm
Meditation and teachings on Buddhist sutras and spiritual practice. Led by Hogen Bays, Roshi.

Online-only Offerings

Wednesday evenings, 6 pm – 7:30 pm; Online only – Zoom link
Silent and guided meditation including calm-abiding, emptiness practice and/or loving-kindness followed by dharma talk. Talk begins at 7pm. Drop in whenever! Led by Zen Teacher Jogen Salzberg.

Friday evenings, 7 pm – 8 pm: Online only – Zoom link
Guided meditations on metta (loving-kindness) as well as compassion, gratitude, and other qualities of the heart. Led by Patrick Bansho Green.
