Portland Insight Meditation Community

Description

Serving Portland OR for more than 20 years, PIMC is an experiment in American Buddhism – dedicated to the liberation from suffering through the teaching of mindfulness practice and the nurturing of mindful community.

We are a 501c3 non-profit that welcomes people of all genders, orientations, religions, beliefs, ages, abilities, and racial, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Founded by Guiding Teacher Robert Beatty, PIMC does not charge a membership fee and there is no membership process. People are simply welcome to attend.

PIMC is a first generation Dharma center with origins in Burma, Thailand and India. Our practice of Insight Meditation (known in Asia as Vipassana) is based upon the Noble Eightfold Path of the Buddha and the teachings that have been passed down through the Theravada lineage for 2500 years.

At the heart of Insight Meditation is the practice of mindfulness, the simple and systematic cultivation of the mind and heart. It is the moment-to-moment investigation of the body, feelings, and consciousness through calm and focused awareness. Practiced regularly, mindfulness meditation relieves stress, has profound beneficial effects upon the body, allows the healing of psychological and emotional wounds, and nurtures the development of wisdom and compassion.

The Portland Insight Meditation Community began in 1978 as the Portland Vipassana Sangha. Its new name was adopted in 2001 when it was incorporated as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization.
