Dharma Talk: The Nine Bodies of Consciousness

Awakening is an embodied experience that is supported through moment to moment awareness. The Nine Bodies teachings is an embodying awareness practice that offers a moment to moment tracking and classifying of meditative experiences. As an insight practice, these teachings provide the means to explore ever more subtle levels of consciousness that can strengthen concentration and brighten awareness. The explorations, grounded in the present moment, can lead to a level of stillness that supports greater clarity and understanding into the causes of suffering and the way leading to the end of suffering. Friday night is a dhamma talk on utilizing…

Mindfulness in Daily Life

Mindfulness in Daily Life — cultivating a heart that’s ready for anything.   During this 3-day retreat at the Mt Adams Zen Buddhist Temple and Trout Lake Abbey, we will use the practices of mindfulness meditation (sitting and walking) and loving-kindness to open fully to our lives. Using the breath to stabilize the mind, we then use the mind’s natural state of openness, wakefulness, and acceptance to become intimate with our current state of suffering. Through meditation, we are developing our capacity to stay with our experiences of pain, rather than trying to fix or eliminate them. We can learn…

Tantric Deep Dive: A week of empowerments

What are Vajrayana Empowerments, Initiations and Wongkur? Namgyal Rinpoche, our lineage root guru, put it best: In the depth of the psyche lie all possibilities in a state of unrealized potential. In every being there exists the possibility of experiencing transcendental consciousness, which when the student is ready, the Teacher(s) can make accessible to him or her via empowerment, initiation, or wongkur. One should regard Wongkur as an event in which the Lama sows the seed of transcendental consciousness in the depth of the student. The seed will lie in the unconscious until the student brings it to realization in…

Dharma Talk: Surviving Modern Life

Dharma Talk with Craig Hase and Devon Hase. Ever feel like you’re lost in the storm, blinded by the blizzard of information, the hurricane of stimulation, the typhoon of opinions and judgments and how-tos and must-dos? We all often feel like a phenomenally dysregulated hot mess, one step behind it all, a storm within the storm, lavishly disorganized and exhausted and not-quite-with-it as the world somehow spins on, never quite sitting still while we never quite sit still either. During this evening together, we’ll spend time meditating, discussing and sharing in dhamma. We’ll work to settle the hot mess of…

Mastering the Sixteen Stages of Insight (Meditation Retreat)

Mastering the Sixteen Stages of Insight Through the Practice of the Foundations of Mindfulness Life is repetitious––we do many things over and over again, often in the same habitual way. The path of insight is about vipassana, literally meaning “looking again and again.” In insight meditation, we look again and again at the arisings within the mind in order to uncover the patterns within. Our minds and bodies are our most precise tools as well as our laboratories. By liberating unconscious patterns, we liberate karma from neurotic repetition. We make way for more wholesome karma–becoming a manifestation of compassion, loving-kindness,…

Dharma Talk: Tina Rasmussen

Concentration or serenity meditation (samatha) is one of three major practices of the Buddhist path, which also includes sila and vipassana. In concentration practice, we return awareness to one object of meditation to the exclusion of everything else, unifying the mind stream. This daylong offers an overview of samatha as taught in the lineage of Ven. Pa Auk Sayadaw of Burma, considered to be the leading living teacher of samatha/jhanas.

Dharma Talk w/ Venerable Pannavati: Understanding the Right Practice of Dharma

Handling worldly affairs and embodying the Dharma are done in this very same body and mind. So, whether we are engaged in training the mind to be unattached and calm, or working to earn a living (or fulfill some other “worldly” goal), if we do so with a void mind that forms no attachments, right there is the  practice of Dharma! This weekend retreat will be an indepth discussion and meditation practice of “voidness” usable in your daily life to uproot anxiety, fear and insecurity.
