This class will be led by Local Dharma Leaders, Steve Wilhelm, Lyndal Johnson, Sooz Appel, Anna Ossenfort, Lauren Wilson, and Jerry Harter
2600 years ago Siddhartha Gotama, the future Buddha, was a prince in an area that’s now a part of northern India. In spite of his comfort and security, he was unhappy and disenchanted with palace life. He decided to leave the palace and begin a spiritual life of a wandering ascetic. His spiritual journey ultimately led to his insight into the nature of life, the causes of suffering, and a path of liberation from the suffering. Over the years his understanding was shared in the form of lists: the four noble truths, the eightfold path, three characteristics, four foundations of mindfulness, ten paramis, four brahma viharas and others.
This seven-week class series will explore a number of these lists and consider how we can use them to guide our practice and our lives. The class will be taught by the SIMS’ Local Dharma Leaders (LDL’s). Each week one or more of these dharma lists will be examined in order to gain an understanding of how they can complement each other and support our spiritual journey.
This course is open to anyone with experience in mindfulness meditation equivalent to SIMS Introductory Meditation Class or who have at least a year of insight meditation experience. While the class will be accessible to beginners, it will also be substantive enough for experienced practitioners.
