Great Vow Zen Monastery

  • Great Vow is a residential, Zen Buddhist, training monastery inspired and guided by Jizo Bodhisattva's vow to help all beings who suffer, no matter where they are found. The monastery's aspiration is to maintain authentic, whole-hearted practice while keeping the teachings open and accessible to anyone with a sincere desire to practice the Buddha-way. Our practice is a synthesis of Soto and Rinzai Zen traditions informed by the practice and study of our teachers, Chozen and Hogen Bays.

At the heart of our training are monthly silent meditation intensives ranging from 6-10 days called sesshin. We also offer a variety of workshops and classes ranging from contemplative arts to compassionate communication with the intention to broaden our expression of wisdom in everyday life. We hope that Great Vow can be a spiritual refuge and a vehicle to carry the life of the Dharma forward for many generations to come.

  • Zen monastic life is based upon simplicity, stillness, and wholehearted effort. This is reflected in the daily schedule of zazen (meditation), chanting services, and work practice.

On Sunday mornings the monastery hosts a public Sunday Program beginning at 10 a.m., with a short service followed by two 25-minute periods of zazen, divided by 10 minutes of walking meditation, and then ends with a talk by one of the teachers or senior students. Meditation instruction is available for beginners.

On Wednesday evenings, we often have a class rather than zazen. This class is usually led by one of the teachers and is on a wide variety of different Buddhist themes. On Sunday mornings, residents participate in a program of meditation and Dharma talk for the public from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
